India exit from World Cup after losing to New Zealand in semi-final
New delhi:
India vs New Zealand, World Cup 2019 1st Semi-Final: Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni’s heroics went in vain as India crashed out of World Cup 2019 after losing to New Zealand in a nail-biting semifinal clash by 18 runs at Manchester. Both batsmen played valiant knocks to rescue the side after early setback but fell just short of the victory margin as India were bundled out for 221 while chasing 240.
India got off to a disastrous start as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul were back to the pavilion when the score was only five. While Henry got rid of both openers Rohit Sharma (1) and KL Rahul, Trent Boult dismissed Kohli (1). Dinesh Karthik (6) became the third victim of Henry when the score was 24. Pant and Pandya then steadied the innings. But Mitchell Santner removed both to reduce India to 92/6. It was here when Jadeja joined Dhoni at the crease and launched India’s fight back. The duo added 116 runs for the sixth wicket. While Jadeja scored 77 hitting four sixes and as many boundaries, Dhoni made 50.
Earlier, gutsy knocks from Kane Williamson (67) and Ross Taylor (74) guided New Zealand to a fighting total in the rain-affected clash. As New Zealand resumed the play from 211/5 in 46.1 overs, Taylor got run out after adding just seven runs to his overnight score. Bhuvneshwar Kumar then struck with his twin-blow sending back Tom Latham (10) and Matt Henry (1).
